Supervision
Supervisors, mentor(s) and doctoral candidate conclude a Supervision Agreement to help with structuring and planning of the dissertation project. Creating a project plan and choosing the subject-related and interdisciplinary qualifications are important elements of the supervision agreement.
TUM Graduate School supervisors have to be professors of TUM School of Medicine and Health (for exceptions please see TUM Promotionsordnung). They bear the primary responsibility for the subject-related supervision.
Advisors and mentors have to be different persons and have to come from different clinics/institutes. Please check specific rules of the program you are applying before making final decision.

Mentors give further academic support and interdisciplinary supervision. They also have to have the title of professor, apl. Prof., PD (in case of TUM, also TUM Junior Fellow title); please note the exception for the Dr.med.(dent.) program.

The advisors and mentors advise the doctoral candidate on his/her research on the dissertation project. In particular, they will:
- introduce the research area and the scientific context,
- inform the doctoral candidate on access options to scientific literature and research material,
- advise the doctoral candidate on developing, defining, delimiting and wording the research project and specific aims,
- discuss and evaluate scientific questions, hypotheses and methods,
- discuss results and their interpretation,
- support the doctoral candidate in attending relevant scientific conferences if financially feasible,
- meet at least semi-annually with the doctoral candidate to review and discuss progress on the research project,
- advise on structure, content and presentation (layout, language, etc.) of the dissertation.
Furthermore, the advisors and mentors advise the doctoral candidate in terms of transferable qualifications and personal development and support efficient progress on the dissertation project.
The advisors and mentors ensure continued advising the doctoral candidate as laid out in this agreement if they leave TUM or Klinikum rechts der Isar.
- The doctoral candidate, in turn, has the obligation to facilitate and make good use of the mentoring listed above through frequent contact with advisors and mentors and focused work on his/her dissertation project.
- The doctoral candidate should be able to engage in the academic self-administration.
- As a TUM-GS member, the doctoral candidate is entitled to numerous qualification opportunities and services offered as part of the TUM-GS training program. In return, (s)he pledges to actively participate in and complete the full training program, in particular the items of the basic program. By doing so, the candidate is entitled to receive TUM-GS funding based on the rules and regulations published by TUM-GS.
- To be awarded the doctoral degree and MGC/TUM-GS certificate, the doctoral candidate has to complete all MGC and TUM-GS requirements and provide the appropriate documentation. Previous academic achievements that have not been credited towards another academic qualification (e.g. Master´s degree) may be submitted to the MGC and TUM-GS for credit consideration.
- The doctoral candidate must be prepared to report on the status and progress of his/her dissertation project to advisors, mentors, MGC and TUM-GS at any given time if asked to do so.
A central account has been pre-configured on the doctoral portal DocGS (link is external)for most of the TUM lecturers. Your username is either the first letter of your first name together with your surname (e.g. John Doe: jdoe) or your e-mail address. The same account can be used also for the account administration of doctoral students taking part in any of the MGC doctoral programs.
You can request a password the first time you log in. If you cannot log in, please do not create a new account, otherwise you will be automatically registered as doctoral student. Instead contact us(link is external), so that we can find out whether you are already registered or eventually create a new user account for you.
